Guarantee

We don’t guarantee our treatment to get rid of glis glis as it isn’t possible to estimate the size of an infestation.

It’s estimated that there are more than 100,000 glis glis in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Essex, Oxford and London.

Glis glis access properties for warmth and shelter. They cause significant damage by gnawing cables and wires which can be a fire hazard. They are nocturnal so make a lot of noise at night by running around in lofts and wall cavities, getting into airing cupboards and kitchens. They are territorial and infest the same property year after year. An infestation can comprise large numbers; a record 145 glis glis were removed from a house in London.

Why is it necessary to use a professional company to remove glis glis?

Glis glis are protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 so they can only be removed by a pest control company which is authorised under licence to trap and remove them. Pest UK have a licence and over 35-years’ experience.

What are the signs glis glis are in a loft?

  • Droppings.
  • Smell of urine and areas which are stained by urine.
  • Gnawed wood, metal, plastics and other materials.
  • Gnawed electrical cables.
  • Evidence of nests.
  • Scratching noises and movements in the loft and wall cavities at night.
  • Damage to young trees and tree bark.

Preparation you must undertake prior to treatment

  • Leave any droppings or damage for the technician to look at.
  • Don’t attempt to block any entry holes.
  • Keep a record of where you see glis glis.
  • Check if your neighbours have seen glis glis.

Aftercare

  • It’s essential to block any holes and points of access to your property to prevent other glis glis from moving into the vacated space. This must only be done after the infestation has been eliminated.

How our treatment works

This treatment includes 3-visits to your property which is usually enough to eradicate an infestation of glis glis. Our technician will use traps which must be checked daily. For heavier infestations more than 3-visits will be required for which an additional charge will apply.

If you see or hear an animal caught in one of the traps that’s in distress you must phone our office. There’s no need to call if the animal is dead.

Additional services we offer

Glis glis proofing

Glis glis are territorial so proofing can’t be done until the current infestation is eliminated as any surviving glis glis can cause further damage by trying to access the area where they’ve been living and breeding.

To effectively protect a property from further infestations long term, proofing must be carried out externally by blocking any holes and points of access to prevent other glis glis from moving into the vacant territory. Our technicians are trained to identify and deal with access point used by glis glis.

To do this properly is time-consuming and may seem costly, but it’s ultimately more cost-effective as it prevents repeated visits by a pest control company to get rid of glis glis from your property.

Loft insulation removal & installation

Glis glis contaminate loft insulation with their droppings and urine.

For a low-level infestation, we recommend spraying the affected area and loft insulation with a biocidal spray.

Price for a biocidal spray treatment from £90 +VAT

However, glis glis can cause major damage to loft insulation by tearing it up for bedding and pilling it into large balls for their nests.

Our loft insulation replacement service includes:

  • Safe removal and disposal of the contaminated loft insulation.
  • Vacuuming of the loft space to remove any droppings and other debris.
  • Application of a biocidal spray to the whole area.
  • Installation of fresh, new loft insulation.

We can only carry out this service after the glis glis infestation has been eradicated.

To find out more see our page on loft insulation removal & installation.

The cost depends on the size of the loft space. Call 0800 026 0308 for a quote.

Facts about glis glis

A glis glis is a large dormouse, with small ears, big eyes, short legs and a 6-inch-long bushy tail. It’s also known as a European edible dormouse because the Romans used to eat them. Zoologist Lionel Walter Rothschild first brought glis glis to Britain for his private collection in Tring, Hertfordshire. In 1902 six of them escaped and they’ve been breeding in the wild ever since.

Glis glis usually hibernate from November to May so they start to seek shelter inside properties in October when the weather gets colder. In late spring when they come out of hibernation they will be looking for food. Their breeding season is from late June to mid-August so they will make their nests during this time and breed.
